My name is Jan van Gorkum and I’m a freelance filmmaker and writer from the Netherlands. In 2010, I graduated as a filmmaker from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), where I studied Audiovisual Media.
I have written and directed several award winning short films that have been shown at film festivals around the world. I have also worked on various film projects as an editor and assistant editor. I’m also the founder and creative director of the Zuiderlijk Film Festival in the south of the Netherlands. Currently, I’m developing my first feature film as a writer/director.
Since I have a broad interest in film genres and formats, my work is very diverse and consists of various genres, ranging from dark comedy to family film. However, I do have a soft spot for the genres dark comedy, thriller, fantasy and horror.
Examples of my films are the dark comedies Spelletjesavond (Game Night) and De Kleinzoon (The Grandson), and the short thriller Tussenstop (Rest Stop). My latest short film, a horror comedy called Shiny New World, is currently screening at festivals around the world. More info about the films can be found here.
Since 2011, I produce my movies with my own company Zuiderlicht Film. Besides developing my own productions, I also make commissioned work.
In November 2019, my first novel has been published in the Netherlands. An adventurous and offbeat fantasybook called Gevleugelde Duisternis (Winged Darkness).
